  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Create a well in the center and add buttermilk, vanilla extract, and egg.
  5. Mix gently until combined; fold in chocolate chips or berries if using.
  6. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead gently before shaping into an 8-10 inch disc.
  7. Chill the disc for 5-10 minutes then cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter for round scones.
  8. Freeze for about 30 minutes before baking for optimal texture.
  9. Bake for 20-26 minutes until golden brown.
