Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 1/4 lbs Granny Smith apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for crumb topping)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter (for crumb topping)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375˚F (190˚C).
  2. Roll out your pie crust and fit it into a greased 9-inch pie pan.
  3. Peel and slice the Granny Smith apples, mixing them with cinnamon in a bowl.
  4. In a saucepan, melt unsalted butter and whisk in flour to create a roux. Gradually add water and granulated sugar, stirring until boiling.
  5. Pour the mixture over the apples and toss to coat before transferring to the pie crust.
  6. For the crumb topping, mix together flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Cut in softened butter until crumbly; fold in pecans if desired.
  7. Spread the crumb topping over the apple filling evenly.
  8. Bake for about 50-60 minutes until golden brown and bubbly; cover loosely with foil if browning too fast.
  9. Allow cooling for at least one hour before serving.
