  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for caramel sauce)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons brewed coffee (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another large bowl, beat softened butter and egg until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in cooled brewed coffee, buttermilk, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture until combined.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. While the cake cools, prepare the caramel sauce by melting brown sugar with remaining unsalted butter and heavy cream over medium heat until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
