Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)
  • Melted vegan butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add flour and salt; mix until slightly sticky.
  2. Knead the Dough: Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled.
  3. Shape Your Pretzels: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes (24 inches) and twist into pretzel shapes.
  4. Boil Your Pretzels: Bring water to a boil in a large pot; add baking soda. Boil shaped pretzels one by one for about 30 seconds before removing with a slotted spoon.
  5. Bake: Place on lined baking sheets, brush with melted vegan butter if desired, sprinkle with coarse sea salt, and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
